Does Visualization Help in Achieving Goals?

by Coach Guerci on July 23, 2009

Visualization is an ability to mentally rehearse an excellent performance or an intended outcome. This technique helps golfers and athletes in goal setting as well as goal achievement. By mentally rehearsing their goals, golfers obtain the feeling of achieving them. The goal can be anything from a perfect shot, good muscle strength, eliminating mind barriers or improving focus to ultimately winning a game.

How Visualization Helps in Goal Achievement
With visualization, golfers create a mental image of their goals. The guided imagery technique is utilized to create a series of mental pictures, where golfers visualize themselves achieving the goals.

Visualization also helps golfers channel their energies towards the attainment of goals. Their minds are ready to invent new solutions to overcome obstacles and materialize their goals.

Through increased focus and removal of mental clutter, visualization helps golfers see new ways to improve their game

In his book “Beneath the Surface,” Michael Phelps, the Olympic gold medalist mentions, “When I’m about to fall asleep, I visualize to the point that I know exactly what I want to do: dive, glide, stroke, flip, reach the wall, hit the split time to the hundredth, then swim back again for as many times as I need to finish the race.”
