Getting into the Zone Using Visualization

by Coach Guerci on July 20, 2009

Did you know that you can achieve peak performance by getting into the zone through visualization? ‘Zone’ here refers to a psychological state that allows golfers to deliver perfect shots by controlling their emotions.

How Visualization Helps in Getting into the Zone

Visualization allows golfers to get into the zone by empowering them with:

Confidence: It helps the player control his excitement or anger, and be certain about his performance. Players feel confident before and after playing every shot. Hence, to enhance confidence and performance, players must visualize before a swing.

Focus: The player only concentrates on the task at hand, to remain in the zone. External situations are unable to impede the player from delivering his peak performance. It is best to avoid verbal processing while in the zone.

Pleasure: Playing in the zone imparts feelings of pleasure, pride and composure to the players.

Relaxation: It is imperative to stay relaxed, irrespective of the performance, while in the zone.

Excitement: Players have to maintain a certain level of excitement to get into the zone. It also helps in overcoming the feelings of guilt about aggression on the field.

Interestingly, Lindsay Davenport, who is a tennis gold medalist and a popular Olympian, uses visualization techniques before her every match. According to Davenport, “Keeping your head in each point is the toughest thing about tennis. You need a sense of calm and a big sense of belief.”

Sports psychologist Coach Guerci provides coaching in visualization techniques to help sportspersons athletes get into the zone swiftly.
