How Visualization Helps Golfers in Dealing with Injuries

by Coach Guerci on July 2, 2009

Injuries are a part of virtually every sport, and golf is no exception. One of the biggest mistakes that golfers do, in case of injury before the competition, is to ignore the pain. This actually aggravates the pain, with the repetitive motions worsening the impact on joints and muscles. Swing mechanics and proper conditioning can no doubt prevent injury, but not as fast as visualization and sports psychology.

Creative Visualization for Relief from Injury

This is a special, yet simple technique that helps golfers recover from pre- or post-game injuries. It arms the player with the required emotional strength and positive energy, which prevents the pain from worsening. Apart from alleviating pain, creative visualization also promotes recovery.

One visualization technique involves replaying the action in your mind, ignoring the injury or pain. The more you visualize it, the more it will lessen the pain. It also boosts the immune response, which, in turn reduces the healing time.

Another technique involves concentrating on the affected part of the body and visualizing the pain coming out from the center.

McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, has also conducted a study on the effect of visualization on results. Golfers were divided into two groups, the first with four handicaps and the second with 26 handicaps. Two sets of instructions were given:

• To keep focusing on the orange ball and get it closer to the hole.
• A technical tip about grip, swing mechanics and weight shift.

At the end of the study, it was concluded that visualization does work; however, it requires players to achieve a certain level of expertise.

Golfers can recover faster from their injuries and attain their best performance with expert guidance from Coach Guerci, a sports hypnosis specialist.
