Importance of Visualization Techniques

Nearly every golf player, who has attained an above-average performance level, practices some kind of visualization technique to improve his game. Visualization and mental training helps golfers enhance their self-confidence by creating clear mental imagery of their shots. This helps them play their shots with the same involvement and intensity.

Techniques of Visualization

The main visualization techniques are:

Internalizing: This refers to playing a shot with the mind’s eye
Externalizing: Visualizing your swing with your eyes open.
Forecasting: Here, the golfer imagines himself to be in a particular situation, delivering the best performance. He may also visualize cheering spectators.
Emotionalizing: Charging up with positive emotions and energy, without seeing anything.
Verbalizing: Description of imagined or real objects, loudly and clearly.

The renowned golfer Jack Nicklaus, popularly called ‘The Golden Bear’, is known to have incredible visualization skills. He used to visualize every shot before playing it. In fact, his visualization was strong enough to even create movies of him hitting the ball and the ball leaping towards the hole. He would also visualize the leaping ball from different angles. This visualization technique would eventually help him play the perfect shot.
