Mental Training for Perfect Swing

by Coach Guerci on August 20, 2009

Did you know that celebrity golfer Tiger Woods was told to visualize his shots before his swing while he was a junior golfer? We all know that golf is at least 80% mental. Then, how ironic is it when golfers seek trainers to get that perfect swing, without even thinking of utilizing mental training for an enhanced golfing prowess.

Mental Training and Perfect Swing

Mental training can start with the following exercises:

• Finding a sense of peace and contentment in the body
• Visualizing the fluidity of motion
• Imagining the sound of a ball dropping in the cup
• The crack off the driver

Gradually, golfers can extend their visualization to encompass that of a perfect swing or putting. That perfect shot must be constantly visualized until the time it is delivered. Visualization or mental rehearsal should ideally be done before and after every shot, even during practice sessions.

The celebrity golfer Jack Nicklaus once said: “I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. First I see the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on the bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes, and I see the ball going there; its path, trajectory, and shape, even its behavior on landing. Then there is a sort of fade-out, and the next scene shows me making the kind of swing that will turn the previous images into reality.”
