Mental Training to Combat Pre-Game Nerves

by Coach Guerci on August 17, 2009

Mental training prepares a golfer to effectively cope up with pre-game nervousness. It also mitigates anxiety levels and empowers a golfer to focus on the game’s constructive aspects.

Common Methods for Combating Pre-Game Nerves

Different golfers use different techniques for dealing with pre-game stress. At times, it can be as simple as chewing gum. The Wrigley Company conducted a survey using 1000 participants. It revealed that around 69% of golfers constantly chewed gum, while preparing for a big tournament. Out of the rest, some preferred to listen to music or just revise their golfing steps.

Although these traditional methods are effective, pre-game nervousness may catch up with a player anytime, at any place. If not dealt with on time, this nervousness can reach critical levels, affecting a golfer’s performance and confidence. Hence, it is advisable to rely on scientific methods of sports psychology to effectively cope with this menace.

Golf and Mental Training
It is rightly said that “Golf is 90% Mental”. This is because maintaining a positive mental framework is extremely essential here. With sports psychology, golfers can discipline their thoughts to:-

• Focus on elements that are under the golfer’s control.
• Not be pre-occupied with others’ perceptions of self.
• Get “in the zone” by reducing stress and improving alertness.
• Visualize the desired goals, strategies and success

Leading sports psychologist Coach Guerci teaches mental training strategies that help golfers overcome their pre-game nerves and enhance their visualization and concentration.
