Sports Hypnosis: Mistakes That Golfers Make

by Coach Guerci on August 6, 2009

Even professional golfers are prone to making mistakes on the field. However, these can be eliminated by practicing the techniques of sports hypnosis. Often, the technicalities of obtaining the right swing become so important that other significant details, such as the right set up and focus, get ignored. Mental training enables golfers to concentrate better, so that they feel ‘in control’ during the game’s critical junctures.

Rectifying Common Mistakes through Sports Hypnosis

Here are some common mistakes of golfers:

• Snap hook: It happens when a right-handed golfer hits the ball in a way that it sharply curves towards the left.
• Blade: When the ball is hit through the bottom edge of the club, the hand experiences a stinging, sharp pain.
• Whiff: When the ball is completely missed to the golfer’s embarrassment, the shot is called a whiff.
• Incorrect knee flex

The crucial phase of transition from backswing to downswing requires maximum control from the golfer. Focus, control and confidence for such trying situations can be achieved through the visualization techniques in sports hypnosis. Visualization also helps the golfer attain a better grip.

In a famous study conducted by Russian scientists on creative visualization in sports, Olympic athletes were divided into four groups who underwent training schedules with different proportions of mental and physical exercises. The group which underwent the maximum amount of mental training (75% mental; 25% physical) outperformed all the other groups. The study concluded that mental images acted as precursors to muscular impulses.
