The Positivity of Sports Psychology

by Coach Guerci on March 23, 2009

Sports psychology and mental training enable players to shift their total focus towards the game than get trapped with stressors or negative feelings of anxiety. Stressors are known to affect a player’s performance in three phases. These phases include before, during and after the sport.

Sometimes, even the most competent players struggle to deal with negative feelings at the last moment. This builds up intense pressure to win. In such times, a player’s heart pumps at a dangerously fast rate. This is where sports psychology becomes relevant as it helps to make a positive difference in a player’s attitude towards victory or defeat.

Combating Stressors and Anxiety through Mental Training

Mental training creates powerful impressions in a player’s mind. Some studies pinpoint that a majority of games have been won by athletes when they play on their own home court. This may be due to factors that trigger their confidence such as cheering home crowds.

Take the example of the 2000 Olympic Games. The host country, Australia, bagged a remarkable medal tally. The same happened at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, where the host country coveted an impressive medal total.

A well structured mental training enables players to be unaffected by the unpredictable ups and downs in sport. Mental training helps players to deal with stress without being ‘psyched out’ in the process.

Coach Guerci knows exactly how stressors impact players and their performance. Through mental training, Coach Guerci propels players to develop the right skills to deal with stressors and perform to their very best.
