The technique of visualization is all about imagining real-life adverse situations. Identification of problem areas is followed by a search for the right solutions. This technique is used in sport hypnosis as it increases concentration levels, thereby making possible the attainment of higher goals.
After goal-setting, a player’s performance is pre-programmed because athletes try to overcome their technical flaws and low self confidence in an imaginary world. A mental victory is captured. Then, while playing the game, there is a repeated affirmation of this to build up confidence.
Ultimately, one experiences peak performance in a real life game. Tiger Woods has attributed his amazing performances to the practice of visualization, since the age of 13.
Types of Visualization: Techniques
Following are the three types of visualization techniques:-
■ Hypnoanalysis: involves visualizing the past glories one has achieved and attempting to incorporate the same qualities in present scenarios.
■ Guided Imagery: is about undergoing a relaxing experience, where the player is ‘guided’ to imagine certain scenarios.
■ Revivification: involves reviving images from the past. Players are asked to recall a previous hypnosis experience to undergo and relate to a similar experience in the present.
Remember, visualization is not a one-time process. It is an active phenomenon. Successful athletes like Tiger Woods practice it daily. They also visualize long-term goals. Together, these two considerations make the technique a constant effort towards peak performance.
Coach Guerci offers mental training for athletes trying to aim higher. The visualization sessions are directed towards increasing a player’s focus to stay in top form and win even in critical situations.
